Shifts in household spending is a huge issue. It’s not just a matter of people who work on the weekend taking money out of their savings. A lot of people simply aren’t saving any money and are merely living paycheck to paycheck.
Let’s take a look at household spending during the holiday season

You might think that most of this will be going into a piggy bank, right? Unfortunately, that’s usually not the case.
It’s more likely that most of it will be going into the pockets of family members, or even friends. A lot of folks keep Christmas presents for other family members and friends, as they think that’s what family is about. After all, who doesn’t want to get something for the holidays?
How do you know who gets a present and who doesn’t?

In many cases, Christmas gifts are received without even being opened or read by the receiver. Most people don’t even know if the person receiving the gift is going to want it, much less use it.
By the time Christmas rolls around, everyone has spent a couple of weeks trying to figure out what gifts they should get. And everyone is going to use up that new cell phone, iPod, TV, DVD player, etc.
A lot of people would prefer to spend Christmas day with their loved ones and have all the gadgets and other gifts, but those gadgets are much more expensive. A gift card might be nice, but you’ve already spent so much that you’re going to spend a fortune on a present.
What can you do to keep from falling victim to this type of spending?

When you’re first starting out, don’t put too much thought into it. Just make sure that everyone gets a little something for Christmas, and that your family is able to celebrate together.
If your family gets a little bit too big, cut back on the present’s a little bit. However, if you find that you need a bit more, go ahead and give it to them.
On the other hand, if your family is getting a little too big, then consider other gifts. I mean, you’ve got to eat, right? So why not give them something that they’ll enjoy instead of keeping it a surprise for themselves?
