Extraordinary increase in accommodation prices in Hungary

There has been a significant increase in terms of Hungarian accommodation prices recently. Our article shows you what to expect when traveling to Hungary.

House prices on the rise

Hosts and private service providers are experimenting at the start of the year. They try to estimate how much they can charge for accommodation on the Hungarian market in the coming year.

In 2022, there will be a price increase of around 70% compared to the first quarter of last year.

While at the beginning of 2021 the national average was 7,100 HUF (20 €)/person/night, this year the same condition is already 12,000 HUF (34 €), writes portfolio.hu. The reason for this increase is complex. Overhead costs increased due to energy prices, and labor costs increased due to labor shortages. There is less income due to inflation, as well as the pandemic. In addition, the tax benefits introduced due to the epidemic have ended.

Several hosting providers have started renovating during the pandemic and are raising prices for better services.

“All this is crowned by the fact that the desire to travel increases from time to time. The desire to escape due to the pandemic and growing demand can also push prices up. We suggest that instead of popular times, such as long weekends, it is worth booking accommodation for the days before or after the holidays. Or, if you have days off, it is better to choose weekdays because in such cases we can usually provide accommodation at a much better price,” said Lili Kelemen, spokesperson for szallas.hu .

Domestic tourism season could be strong this year

The number of pre-bookings is already higher than last year.

According to the data collected so far, the most popular tourist destinations, besides the capital, are Eger, Gyula, Hajdúszoboszló, Hévíz, Pécs, Szeged and Zalakaros, writes haszon.hu.

Andrea Rádóczy, regional chairman of the Association of Hungarian Hotels and Restaurants at Lake Balaton, said many accommodation providers have switched to dynamic pricing. This method is also used when purchasing airline tickets.

“This means that demand determines the price. So, when looking at prices, an important factor to take into account is the time period you are thinking of and the number of weeks or months before the date you start looking for accommodation.

It’s hard to get a discounted price at the last minute. However, with conscious planning, you can book a number of special hotel stays, even with discounts and additional services,” Rádóczy suggested.
