Hungarian-Turkish relations excellent, says speaker of parliament

Speaker of the House László Kövér discussed with Mustafa Sentop, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the economic and security impact and threats of the Ukraine-Russia war and Hungarian-Turkish relations during their meeting in Budapest on Wednesday.

Speaking at a joint press conference in parliament after the event, Kövér expressed Hungary’s appreciation to Turkey for its “stabilizing role and support for the European Union”.

He highlighted Turkey’s efforts in the fight against migration and towards energy security, noting that Turkey “has largely contributed to eliminating a potential global humanitarian catastrophe triggered by food shortages. Kövér called for Turkey’s membership of the European Union which he said Hungary would support “to the best of its abilities”.

The Speaker of the Parliament described the bilateral relations as excellent, which the two parties also reaffirmed during their meeting. He said the leaders of the two countries would meet soon for strategic consultations, adding that he had accepted an invitation to visit Turkey.

Sentop said he assessed the cooperation of the parliaments of the two countries and discussed the possibility of developing them to a higher level. He described bilateral political, economic and commercial cooperation as excellent and expressed his thanks for Hungary’s support in Turkey’s integration into the EU.
